The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo was established by the businessman, Spencer Penrose. After receiving a bear for a gift in 1916, he started developing an interest of collecting animals. The animals were housed at his Broadmoor Hotel. However, he had to find a new location for his animals after a monkey bit a hotel guest. Thus, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo was established in 1926. It was later incorporated as a non-profit public trust to the people of Colorado Springs. The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo operates as a zoological park and it is certified by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums. Located towards the south of Colorado Springs, Colorado, on Cheyenne Mountain, the zoo is spread over an area of a whopping 140 acres. It accommodates over 750 animals, representing nearly 150 different species. Out of the 150 different species, more than 30 of them are considered endangered. Some of the animals and wildlife you can see in the zoo include meerkats, reticulated giraffe, griffin vultures, Amur leopards and tigers, snow leopards, African penguins, Nile hippopotamuses, emus, American alligators, Asiatic black bears, Andean Bears, black rhinoceros, African elephants and lions, mountain goats, Mexican gray wolves etc. You should also know that the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is one of only two zoos in America to exhibit mountain tapirs. There are many things you can do at the zoo. In addition to viewing the animals the zoo has comfortably housed in secure conditions, you also get the opportunity to hop aboard a captivating historic carousel that has been active at the zoo since 1937. You can take your kids on the chairlift-style Sky Ride and view the zoo from above as well. If you want to interact with the animals, you can stop by The Loft, where you can get the chance to go hands-on with the animals in the zoo and learn what it is like to work with wildlife; it is even possible for you to hand-feed the giraffe herd.
How long does it take to go through the zoo you ask? Well, if you want to see everything at a fast pace, you can go through the zoo in a couple hours. However, if you want to enjoy your favorite animals and have lunch or a snack, it takes an average of 3 to 4 hours. The zoo is an amazing relaxing place; so, it is in your best interest to free up your schedule to take full advantage.
